Excerpt:
He uses driftwood, the surface of water, everything on Earth becomes his instrument. A masterpiece by a remarkable percussionist, released in 1990 by NEWSIC, a label that led Japanese environmental music!
Listening to Ochi-san's Natural Sonic reminds me of the time I used to go to the St.GIGA (satellite music broadcasting station) studio in front of Jingu Shrine. This album was secretly played there every day. "The Sounds of the Earth" born in Tokyo. - Yoshiro Oshima (composer/music producer)
Yoshiaki Ochi, a percussionist who gained attention for his composition and performance for Issey Miyake's collections from 1984 to 1990, is active in a wide range of fields, including music production for TV and radio, live performances with artists such as GONTITI, and the development of workshops. He traveled, drumming on taiko drums, and collected a variety of living sounds by striking natural objects he encountered. Those sounds gently blend with computer sounds, repeating a pleasant resonance. A magically effective massage of sound and rhythm. One of the most popular titles from the 'NEWSIC' label!
A masterpiece by percussionist Yoshiaki Ochi, released in 1990. Long considered a hidden gem of environmental music, this work is a captivating exploration of the sounds and rhythms of the Earth. It's a tapestry of sounds woven from wood, flowing water, stone, and skin. He was the in-house composer and performer for the world-renowned designer Issey Miyake at the time, and he created a series of elemental works that blurred the boundaries between avant-garde percussion, ritual music, and environmental music. Ochi's work evokes the organic minimalism seen in Midori Takada's "Through the Looking Glass" and the ecological grandeur seen in Geinoh Yamashirogumi's "Ecophony Gaia," opening the door to primordial landscapes and bringing to mind forests, rivers, and flowing stones. A treasure of the golden age of Japanese environmental music.
