A copper bangle believed to be a novelty item made by Tiffany & Co. for the American mining company Phelps Dodge.
The main feature is its construction, which appears to hold a copper plate with brass clips, and the contrast of the materials enhances its industrial beauty.
The copper used is presumed to be from the company's iconic Copper Queen Mine, giving it a rare provenance that combines corporate history and material history.
Phelps Dodge, founded in 1834, was a major mining company that operated until its acquisition in 2007. In its heyday of the 1970s and 80s, it distributed many copper novelties as internal awards to celebrate accident-free and disaster-free records. However, this piece made by Tiffany is the only one known to exist at present, and there are almost no confirmed examples of its distribution.
Tiffany & Co. has produced many commemorative items for companies, but this piece, which was made with an original design for the company instead of a generic design with a name, is an extremely rare item.
The simple warmth of the copper and the accent of the brass, combined with Tiffany's reliable craftsmanship, make it an excellent piece for collections, as well as a piece that adds an American industrial story to your outfit.
