Handmade studio pottery shallow bowl or plate created in 1985 and signed Dorothy Long, a Pennsylvania studio potter known for redware and historically inspired folk pottery. The interior features a sgraffito bird motif beneath a soft green glaze, with exposed red earthenware at the rim and base.
The underside is extensively inscribed, noting that the form and decoration were patterned after ceramic fragments excavated at General Varnum’s quarters at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. An impressed N.I.B.T. stamp is also present, indicating association with a heritage craft or educational program active during this period.
This piece is an interpretive studio work, created as a historical reference rather than a reproduction artifact. Its shallow form allows it to function as a serving bowl, decorative plate, or wall-mounted display.
