The coin has a copper core clad with manganese brass, giving it a distinctive golden color.
The obverse (front) was designed by Glenna Goodacre and features Sacagawea in a three-quarter profile.
The reverse, from 2000 to 2008, featured an eagle design by Thomas D. Rogers.
It was introduced in 2000 as a replacement for the Susan B. Anthony dollar but proved unpopular for everyday commerce.
