The Alvin Corporation introduced its Della Robbia sterling silver flatware and hollowware service in 1922, featuring a "beautifully chased design" The name "Della Robbia" was inspired by the 15th-century Italian family workshop of Luca della Robbia, known for its colorful reliefs. The Alvin Corporation itself was founded in New Jersey in 1886, moved its operations to Sag Harbor, New York, and became a well-known maker of silver products before being acquired by Gorham in 1928.
