True blue tip matches (mostly early–mid 20th century) were genuine strike-anywhere matches.
They used white (yellow) phosphorus or early phosphorus compounds in the tip itself, allowing them to ignite on almost any rough surface—not just a specially treated striker.
Modern “strike-anywhere” matches are heavily reformulated and far less reliable.
