The idea of Kris Kringle had begun in Europe centuries before. German and Austrian children who waited on Christmas Eve for "Christkindl"-literally, the Christ Child- moved to America and brought their beliefs with them. Eventually he blending of the German and English languages changed their gift bringer's name to "Kris Kringle." Finally, the image of the traditional American Santa Claus in his holiday garb came to be associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch Kris Kringle, and this old world figure eventually came to look the way he is portrayed here: a happy, hooded fellow bearing all the joys of the season.
