Directed, produced, written, and based on the novel by Elia Kazan, who also directed "America America." Cinematography by Robert Surtees ("The Graduate"), production design by Gene Callahan ("America America"), art direction by Malcolm Bert, and editing by Stefan Arnsten.
Starring Kirk Douglas ("Gunfight at the O.K. Corral"), Faye Dunaway ("The Arrangement"), and Deborah Kerr ("The Hucksters"). Also featuring Richard Boone, Hume Cronyn, and Diane Hal.
Following the film adaptation of his previous work, "America America," E. Kazan adapted his best-selling novel "The Arrangement" into a film, a project he considered a life's work. While the previous work focused on a young man's gamble to immigrate to America, this film's protagonist belongs to the second generation of immigrants, making it a sister film.
A man who enjoyed a fulfilling life both personally and professionally, after a car accident, his heart drifts away from his wife, and his memories are filled with a woman with whom he had an affair. His erratic behavior after recovery is not understood by those around him, and his reunion with the woman makes it definitive. Eventually, he gives his fortune to his wife and is sent to a mental hospital. And, the man who has abandoned his position and fame finds peace in life with the woman...
Kazan, who has been particularly focused on sexual depictions in conservative Hollywood, frequently used flashbacks of sex scenes, and at the time, the bold depictions were well-received. As it is a film adaptation of a long novel, the story is not just a love triangle, but also incorporates various characters such as the protagonist's father who went bankrupt in the Great Depression after immigrating, the wife who is always trying to be intellectual and cultured, and the consulting lawyer who is a key figure in the protagonist's family, trying to depict the anguish of modern people suffering in modern society. However, although it became a bestseller during a time when American cinema was undergoing significant changes with the New Cinema, the approach of visualizing the entire work, along with the assumption that love is finding peace in a promiscuous woman, is difficult to accept straightforwardly.
